President Anura Kumara, while addressing the public during his campaign, made a bold promise to reveal the masterminds behind the tragic Easter Sunday attacks. However, he has since shifted his stance, now stating that investigations are still ongoing and that more time is needed. This shift leaves many citizens disillusioned and yearning for accountability and transparency.
Furthermore, the President’s statement during an election meeting—that government funds will not be allocated to local authorities managed by opposition parties—raises serious concerns. Following backlash from the opposition, the President attempted to soften the message, claiming that funds will be allocated more “carefully” to such authorities.
As citizens, we expect our leaders to uphold a sense of dignity and decorum when addressing the public. Words spoken from a position of power carry weight and consequences. It is imperative that leaders stand by what they say, rather than backtracking.
To maintain credibility and public trust, it would be wise for public officials to vet their speeches with experienced advisers and subject matter experts who will dissect, analyse, cut, chop and refine their messages for clarity and accuracy before facing the nation.
Public discourse deserves sincerity and responsibility. Leadership demands it.
