Several uncovered gullies along Sri Sumanatissa Mawatha, Armour Street, Colombo 12, have become serious death traps for pedestrians and motorists alike.
There are three rectangular gullies in dilapidated condition:
1. One directly opposite the Olive Health Care – a medical clinic.
2. Another beside the entrance to the Ayurvedic Clinic, Department of Indigenous Medicine, CMC.
3. A third near the Community Hall (Prajaa Shaalaawa), which has only a makeshift cover.
These open gullies pose a grave danger, especially during power failures at night, when visibility is poor and the risk of accidents is very high.
I request the Colombo Municipal Council (CMC) or the National Housing Development Authority (NHDA), whichever institution holds responsibility, to take immediate remedial action. The gullies should either be securely covered or protected with a short boundary wall, at least three feet high, to prevent vehicles or unsuspecting pedestrians from falling in.
Prompt action could help avert a serious tragedy.
