Another May Day comes by. According to the news, there will be 21 rallies held by the NPP. People don’t need any more promises, but they want to see that these promises already made are being delivered. The government reiterated the fact that it would retrieve money allegedly stolen by the Rajapaksa regime and hidden in foreign countries. They said they would eliminate corruption, but they seem to be unable to walk the talk. A number of cases -- from speaker Asoka Ranwala’s resignation, to the alleged coal scandal to the recent USD 2.5 million fraud to money that has now gone missing following a payment to US Post, require thorough investigations. When such matters arise, the government should assure that these matters are being investigated. The Finance Secretary is now being quizzed by COPF regarding this matter. The Opposition has started raising these issues and it only takes a few minutes to become unpopular among the masses. Therefore the government needs to prove that it is accountable for its actions without beating around the bush.
