It has been tragically reported that the recent death of a second-year student from the Faculty of Technology at Sabaragamuwa University was the result of ragging. This heartbreaking incident highlights the urgent need for a practical and enforceable solution to eliminate ragging from our State universities.
One such measure is to introduce a legally binding agreement for all undergraduates, clearly stating that those found guilty of engaging in or instigating ragging will face immediate disciplinary action, including dismissal from the university.
As a starting point, institutions may consider imposing temporary suspensions of one to two years. Should these measures prove insufficient, permanent expulsion must be enforced without hesitation. Strong deterrents are essential to safeguard students and restore a safe learning environment.
I request the Hon. Prime Minister and the Hon. Minister of Education, Higher Education and Vocational Training, Dr. Harini Amarasuriya, to consider this proposal seriously. Alternatively, I welcome insights and suggestions from academic professionals and the informed public to help eradicate this cruel practice once and for all.
