All legislators should bear in mind that they have been elected as temporary custodians for a specific period and whatever decisions made during this term should be done wisely with long term interest of the country in mind. However, since early the 1980’s, the public perception is deteriorating as the very idea of accountability meant to anchor good governance has been reduced to political showmanship.
Let’s not comment of the allegations made against former President Ranil Wickremesinghe as Lady Justice will handle it. Mr. Wickremasinghe comes from the privileged society of Colombo and perhaps does not have a clue as to what the ordinary person goes through to survive a day. He was remanded for 4 days and this would be an ideal opportunity for the authorities to take him around the cells to ascertain for himself what the prisoners go through, “ prisoners are human beings, too”, is exhibited glaringly outside on the prison’s walls.
However, he may have missed that because he was transferred to the National hospital due to health issues. Once again, his level of society never gets admitted to Government hospitals but go overseas for their medical requirements. Being in a Goverment hospital, I wish he will get a glimpse of the trying conditions the medical staff and patients go through.
Former President Mahinda Rajapakse got the best opportunity to turn this country around in 2009 and the rest is history. Ranil Wickremesinghe in 2022 requesting the people to tighten their belts until he takes Sri Lanka to the other side of the “rope bridge” was more focused on the 2024 Presidential election and was blind towards corruption and misuse of his team. Politicians of this country were always divided and whatever good work done by the previous government was aborted or changed when the other set came to power. It was the inefficiency of the legislators that brought this Government to power from a vote base of 3%.
It says that the wheels of justice turn slowly, but grind exceedingly fine. Hence the current government too will have to keep this in mind and be transparent in what they do regarding the country.
