Further to the exposure in connection with the above in your paper of May 27, 2025, I wish to bring to public notice another major health hazard being neglected by the authorities.
A plot of vacant government land, administered by the NHDA, has become a growing garbage dump in the heart of Colombo 8.
This land is situated opposite the Police Fraud Bureau, just 200 metres from the general cemetery, on Elvitigala Mawatha, Colombo 8 and it has become a garbage dump. Irresponsible citizens dump all types of waste containers, wet garbage, discarded construction rubbish etc. in this land daily.
The staff of the Colombo City Office of the NHDA profess ignorance of this garbage dump in their premises and refuse to take any action. The matter was also raised with the head office of the NHDA, but no action has been taken to date. In the meantime, the dump continues to grow!
With Chikungunaya and Dengue raging in this area, are the offices concerned waiting till this becomes a repeat of the Meetotamulla dump?
Is this government serious on their policy - “Clean Sri Lanka”?
Will the authorities please take note of this major health hazard and take some action without further delay to avoid further fatalities?
