The news of a university student who was asked to take off his clothes as part of a ragging incident at the Sabaragamuwa University took his own life on Wednesday. Students enter universities with much hopes and aspirations, to fulfil their dreams and achieve their career goals. But, not many of them could get over the brutal ragging culture that had prevailed within the university system for many years. What began as harmless ways of having fun, such as singing on a table or acting something out, eventually escalated to brutal ways of harming students and discouraging them from pursuing higher education.
There have been instances when students were stripped naked and were assaulted physically and sexually with the blessings of hostel wardens, etc. Despite various interventions by the University Grants Commission and other authorities to put an end to university ragging, the matter has escalated to a point where students now don’t think twice about taking their own lives instead of facing humiliation on a daily basis. When the incumbent government was in opposition, they had various proposals and suggestions to put an end to the ragging menace, but it now seems like they have sugar-coated the issue all these years! The perpetrators of these crimes need to be apprehended, and maximum punishment should be enforced to discourage others from following the same path. University education should be a pleasant experience for students, not a living hell that would bring about psychological trauma for the rest of their lives and those of their loved ones!
