Begin teaching road discipline in the schools

The Police must enforce road discipline to counter accidents. The best is a very strenuous training in Prevention, Detection. and proper prosecution. These are the three main ingredients the Police should concentrate on if the police is to achieve desired success.

The Police Department should have a long term plan and a short term plan in handling and creating road discipline. The long term plan should commence with the Schools and they must inculcate in them a sense of discipline as pedestrians and riders of bicycles giving the responsibility to handle traffic issues at entrances and exits to their schools with good demonstration squads organised by The Traffic Headquarters,  as done in the past by the police led by Late S.B. Senaratna ( Rtd SSP).

The Police should create competitions among schools and offer  awards etc.. The short term action should be for the Traffic Headquarters to find sponsors,  and ensure there are competitions for good driving throughout the Island.  and also getting offenders to attend refresher courses in driving during weekends and public Holidays,  rather than imposing fines which should be the last resort.

The Police should with the Local authorities ensure that there are traffic lights along with CCTV cameras,  with the cameras being monitored at District Headquarters and imposing fines or taking such offenders to courts.

It looks as if there is no proper planning by the police in training their personnel in taking offenders to task,  as they appear not to know about various offences committed  to charge those driving or riding vehicles in a a negligent manner!

Let us hope that the Police commence training their own staff to enable good law enforcement.
