Are Sri Lankans safe at this juncture?
The government is maintaining a deafening silence on the shooting incidents happening around the country. Three incidents were reported on Tuesday (April 22). In one incident the targeted victim grabbed the pistol from a suspect who walked into his house and averted a deadly encounter. One of the suspects later fell off a wall while attempting to run away and injured his leg. Several ammunition and weapons were recovered while in his possession. While certain factions claim that this is in fact an ongoing rivalry between two underworld gangs, speculation is rife whether certain elements are attempting to eliminate state witnesses in various legal cases. Whatever the reason it may be, the government should give a reassurance to the public to ensure their safety. A majority of the populace elected this government into power with hopes that they would see an end to gun violence and usher in a disciplined society. But whether people are really safe is the million dollar question.
