International organizations such as the UN Family Planning Agency and the Sri Lankan government is out to destroy local schoolchildren by misleading them in the guise of providing them sex education, Archbishop of Colombo Cardinal Malcolm Ranjith said yesterday.

Speaking during a service at St. Stephen’s Church Meerigama, Cardinal Ranjith said some international organizations provide funding and written material to the Sri Lankan government to impart sex education to school children.

“We have heard that the sex education programme is to begin from January next year. Sex education is to be provided from Grade six. They are to be thought on birth control and on same sex relationships. Small children will be misled by this move. The values they try to impart on our children are ones upheld by the Western world. They should promote these values in their own countries. A child should grow up with values taught by their religions. One must follow religious teaching rather than merely offering flowers in temples and lighting candles in churches,” he said.

“We have heard that even teachers are going to be trained as well to impart sex education on children. What should be done is to educate parents. It is the parents who should impart knowledge on sex and other important values to their children as they grow up. Therefore, it is the parents who should be trained “ he added.
