A sinister move is on to get government henchmen appointed to the Constitutional Council (CC) as the term of the three civil society representatives ends on January 2, 2026.
Pivithuru Hela Urumaya Leader Udaya Gammanpila told the media that the government was delaying the appointment of an Auditor General until the term of the civil society members lapses on January 2, 2026.
“This is being done to get government henchmen appointed as the civil society representatives of CC,” he said.
SJB MP S. M. Marikkar also came up with a similar allegation.
“The plan is to influence the Prime Minister and Leader of the Opposition to agree to three members of civil society which is going to be handpicked by the government. We hope that the Prime Minister and the Opposition Leader become firm and see that three independent members are appointed to the constitutional council,” MP Marikkar said.
Meanwhile Deputy Minister Mahinda Jayasinghe who referred to the allegation dismissed the claims. “The government has not appointed any of its henchmen to any position. “We will appoint a person who could do his utmost for the nation as the new Auditor General,” he said.
