Prof. Namal Wijesinghe elected President of Ceylon College of Physicians



Ceylon College of Physicians has elected Professor Namal Wijesinghe as its 50th president to lead the College for the year 2026.

The Ceylon College of Physiciansis Sri Lanka’s premier professional organization for specialists in Internal Medicine and its finer specialties, which currently include Cardiology, Endocrinology, Gastroenterology, Nephrology, Rheumatology and Rehabilitation Medicine, Neurology, Pulmonology and Critical Care Medicine.   

The Ceylon College of Physicians engages in various activities to support the medical community and the public. It holds annual academic sessions and other events to provide continuous professional development opportunities for doctors. Also, the College focuses on promoting research among physicians, especially in tropical medicine and non-communicable diseases.   

Professor Namal Wijesinghe works as the Professor of Medicine at the Faculty of Medicine of General Sir John Kotelawala Defence University. He is also the former Dean of this medical faculty. After his primary and secondary education from Rahula College, Matara, and Royal College, Colombo, he graduated from the Faculty of Medicine of Ruhuna University and had his initial postgraduate training at the Post Graduate Institute of Medicine of Colombo University, Sri Lanka, to obtain MD (Medicine).   He had advanced training in Cardiology in New Zealand to obtain Fellowship of Royal Australasian College of Physician (FRACP). He had interventional cardiology training at the St Paul’s Hospital, Vancouver. He has also been honored with Fellowship of Royal College of Physicians (FRCP), Fellowship of Royal College of Physicians of Edinburgh (FRCP Edin), Fellowship of Ceylon College of Physicians (FCCP), Fellowship of Cardiac Society of Australia and New Zealand (FCSANZ) and the Fellowship of European Society of Cardiology (FESC). Professor Namal Wijesinghe is an experienced journal editor as well.
