More than 31,000 animals in livestock farms have died in the Polonnaruwa District due to the recent natural disaster, according to a survey conducted by the Polonnaruwa District Secretariat.
The report revealed that the losses include 3,172 cattle, 388 goats, and 27,847 chickens across the seven divisional secretariats in the district. In addition, nine ornamental fish farms have been completely destroyed.
The highest number of cattle deaths—1,100—was reported from the Dimbulagala Divisional Secretariat, making it is the worst-affected area in terms of livestock losses.
District authorities stated that further assessments are underway and that steps will be taken to provide relief to affected livestock farmers.
