Opposition intensifies its call to convene Parliament

The opposition is slated to intensify its call to convene Parliament as Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB) are making preparations to make a written request to that effect.   

SJB MP Kavinda Jayawardana told Daily Mirror that his party will make a written request from the Speaker Jagath Wickramaratne and Prime Minister Harini Amarasuriya to convene Parliament next week.   

SLPP MP Namal Rajapaksa recently made a written request from Prime Minister Harini Amarasuriya to convene the House few days ago.   

The opposition has actually wanted a debate on the recent disaster, Daily mirror reliably learnt.   

Meanwhile possibility of convening Parliament next week for a debate on the disaster situation has arisen with the requests that is being made by the opposition to that effect and that the cry by the opposition that its request to appoint a select committee to probe the failure to prevent the havoc caused by the Cyclone Ditwar is getting delayed.   

Parliament was adjourned till January 6 2026 after the conclusion of the budget.   

Opposition MP Dayasiri Jayasekera told Daily Mirror that he had heard of a plan to convene Parliament next week.   

“No response has been made by the government to our request to appoint a select committee to probe into the failure to prevent the havoc caused by the recent cyclone,” he said.   

Meanwhile a spokesman from the Leader of the House said no final decision has been made on reconvening of Parliament though there was strong speculation that the House would be convened early.
