Nurse dies during childbirth at Peradeniya, newborn safe

An unfortunate incident occurred at the Peradeniya Teaching Hospital when a 37-year-old nurse Isuru Nadeeshani Dissanayake from Kandy National Hospital passed away while giving birth to her third child. Hospital sources confirmed that the newborn is in good health.  

The nurse had previously served for several years at the Anuradhapura Hospital and had joined the pediatric department at the Kandy National Hospital about three months ago.  

Doctors identified that she was in a high-risk condition due to an abnormal placental position, and she was immediately taken for an emergency cesarean section under the supervision of obstetrician Dr. Sampath Tushara Gnanaratna.  

Despite the efforts of the medical team, she suffered severe internal bleeding, requiring approximately 12 units of blood transfusion, hospital sources said.  

The deceased is survived by two young children aged 9 and 5.
