Minister of Justice Harshana Nanayakkara said that there has been no discussion within the Cabinet of Ministers regarding the removal of the current Attorney General or the introduction of an impeachment motion against him.

This statement was made in response to questions raised by journalists regarding various opinions circulating on social media.

When asked if there were any preparations to remove the Attorney General, the Minister said, “We have not held any such discussion within the Cabinet regarding whether to bring an impeachment motion to remove the Attorney General.”   The Minister said that various debates have emerged on social media platforms regarding the Attorney General recently. He pointed out that while some parties argue that the Attorney General should be protected, others express the view that he should be removed from office.

The Minister said that certain social media posts are even calling for the removal of the Minister of Justice.

However, he clarified that there is no connection between the opinions expressed on social media and the government’s official stance. “The things circulating on social media are the work of those individuals. The government has no connection to them,” he said.
