The Colombo Municipal Council (CMC) administration has the option of presenting a fresh budget within 14 days, in accordance with the Local Government Ordinance, a long-standing member of the CMC said.

Long-standing CMC member Tony Ramzi told the Daily Mirror that the administration is permitted to bring in a new budget under the Local Government Ordinance, while the Minister in charge of Local Government bodies also has the authority to approve a third budget as provided by law.

The ruling National People’s Power (NPP) failed to pass its budget in the Colombo Municipal Council yesterday as only 57 members voted in favour of the budget while 60 voted against. Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB), Sarwajana Balaya, UNP and three independent members voted against the budget, setting the stage for its defeat.
