Flower plucking turns fatal as wild elephant kills elderly woman

• Residents say that the proposed electric fence has been stalled for two years

A woman died, and another received serious injuries in their encounter with a wild elephant at Vihara Halmillewa in Anuradhapura on Wednesday evening.   

The deceased P. Sangu (91) was a resident of Vihara Halmillewa I area. The injured was the deceased’s daughter-in-law, and she was admitted to Anuradhapura Teaching Hospital.   

They had been plucking flowers in front of their house when a jumbo rammed into the garden and hit them, causing the death of the elderly woman and serious injuries to the other.   

Residents of the area said the proposed electric fence to provide protection to the area has been stalled for about two years.   

Elayapattu Police are conducting further investigations.
