Due to the recent destruction of Cyclone Ditwah and flash floods, as many as 83 archaeological sites have been damaged or destroyed in some form or the other, Director General of Archaeology, Thushitha N. W. Ranasinghe told the Daily Mirror.
She said, “There are around eight sites completely destroyed. 24 sites are partly damaged. We visited the sites last week. We are waiting for estimates to allocate funds and repair them. Assessments are still on”.
Naming a few sites, she revealed Badulla’s Bogoda Puraana Temple’s paintings have taken a hit. “Some of them are from Northwestern Province, North Central and Central Provinces. “These range from minor to major damage”, she added.
