Claiming that the Constitutional Council’s continuous refusal of President’s nominees for the position of the Auditor General (AG) is an act of sabotage, Cabinet Spokesman Nalinda Jayatissa said yesterday the CC had no right to refute President’s nominee if it fulfilled the criteria stipulated in the Constitution.
He told the weekly briefing to announce cabinet decisions that the CC had refuted President’s nominee as AG four times and that the President had nominated qualified individuals who meet criteria stipulated in the Constitution with regard to appointing an AG. The Minister said the CC has a right to approve the President’s nominee as per the Constitution and alleged that the CC’s continuous refusal of the nominee is an attempt to sabotage the state mechanism.
He said the CC has a responsibility to act on the provisions of the Constitution with regard to the approving of the President’s nominee.
