Brace for severe lightning in Western, Sabaragamuwa, Galle & Matara Districts: Met. Dept.

The meteorology department, in an advisory yesterday, issued a severe lightning warning for certain areas of Western, Sabaragamuwa, Galle and Matara Districts along with thundershowers this week.   

The warning covers, Gampaha, Colombo and Kalutara of the Western Province, Kegalle and Ratnapura of Sabaragamuwa and Galle and Matara Districts.  The advisory added that there may be temporary localised fierce winds during these thunderstorms as it has been the case in the evenings especially in Colombo.  

They urged the public to take precautions to minimise damage caused by these weather patterns.   They also advised the public to take shelter, ideally indoors and not under trees, and to avoid open areas such as paddy fields, tea plantations and open bodies of water during these times and to avoid using wired telephones and connecting electric appliances.
