At least 2368 cybercrimes reported in Sri Lanka this year : Minister

There has been 2368 reported cybercrimes in Sri Lanka up to October 31 2025, Minister of Public Security Ananda Wijepala said in Parliament yesterday.  

Responding to an oral question raised by MP Rajeewan Jeyachandramoorthy, The Minister said 1539 cases of cybercrimes had been reported in 2024, 472 in 2023, 654 in 2022, 557 in 2021 and 24 in 2020.  

The Minister also  said there had been 41 cases of online banking scams, phishing and unauthorized electronic fund transfers in the Northern Province alone received through official cybercrime platforms or police cyber crimes unit from the year 2020 to date.  

MP Jeyachandramoorthy urged the Minister to look into increasing online banking scams in the North during recent times. 

The Minister who responded said the cybercrimes unit of the police will be upgraded into a division soon. He said the police will soon have a DIG cybercrimes. It was also revealed that a special training was being given to police personnel in fighting cybercrimes.
