In the realm of selflessness and unwavering dedication, there are those rare individuals who shine as beacons of compassion, tirelessly striving to make a positive impact in the lives of others. Ananda Srilal Liyanapathiranage, 76, a beloved Sri Lankan who lived in Minnesota, United States of America, never forgot his roots and he touched the hearts of countless individuals through his tireless efforts to bridge communities. He breathed his last on June 22 of a brain haemorrhage at the Sri Jayewardenepura General Hospital in Sri Lanka. As we bid farewell to this remarkable soul, let us celebrate the life and legacy of a man who epitomized the values of love, friendship, and service.

After graduating in 1973 from the University of Kelaniya in Sri Lanka, where he studied economics, geography, and language, Liyanapathiranage worked for the Ceylon Ceramics Corp. Before he migrated to the States, he was working as assistant controller for the country’s Department of Immigration and Emigration where he worked from 1977 to 1979.

His work with the Minnesota Department of Finance and his involvement with numerous organizations highlighted his dedication to public service and his desire to make a difference in the lives of those around him. His contributions to the boards of the St. Paul Foundation of Asian Pacific Endowment, and the Asian Pacific Cultural Centre, among others, showcased his commitment to promoting inclusivity and harmony.  After witnessing the devastating aftermath of the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami, Liyanapathiranage sprang into action, organizing fundraisers and dedicating months of his life to assisting those affected. He and his fellow Sri Lankans were able to build 50 houses and a community centre that includes a library, preschool and a medical clinic in a village in Hikkaduwa.

“Such a loving heart. Such a profound desire to do and see the good in the world and people and share that with others. So much commitment and devotion to community, family, youth and service… it is absolutely amazing. My father is a gift that keeps on giving,” his daughter freelance artist Dulini Maheshika Liyanapathiranage wrote in a social media tribute post.

Recognizing the importance of education as a catalyst for change, his devotion extended to the empowerment of future generations. At the time of his death, he was raising funds to donate backpacks and school supplies for 1,000 students in Sri Lanka. His son Lanka Liyanapathiranage who is a lead educator at the Walker Art Center in Minneapolis and his daughter Dulini will continue the fundraiser and complete their father’s noble endeavor. Speaking to the Minnesota-based newspaper Pioneer Press, Lanka said, “Helping him achieve this goal, which he couldn’t complete while he was alive, would truly be a way to honour his legacy.”

His spirit will live on in the hearts of all those he touched, and his legacy will continue to inspire acts of kindness and generosity for generations to come

Indeed his legacy lies in the countless lives he touched, the hearts he warmed, and the friendships he fostered. Known for his unwavering kindness and infectious smile, he effortlessly brought people together, uniting individuals from diverse backgrounds with a shared purpose. His ability to connect on a personal level, to listen, and to offer genuine support was truly unparalleled. Ananda Srilal Liyanapathiranage has left an indelible mark on the hearts and minds of those fortunate enough to have crossed paths with him including me. As I reflect on my time in Minnesota when I was following the World Press Institute journalism fellowship programme early this year, I can’t help but be grateful for the profound impact he had on my journey as a journalist and as a person. From the moment I reached out to Mr Liyanapathiranage, his warmth and compassion were evident. Despite his busy schedule, he went above and beyond to ensure that my stay in Minnesota was not only memorable but also filled with meaningful encounters. It was through his efforts that I had the privilege of meeting extraordinary individuals like Udi Perera, and Mithula Perera who are the Founders of a renowned early education school network in Minnesota called ‘Miniapple’, and Nilushi Ranaweera, the first ever Sri Lankan to have been appointed as an Assistant Attorney General in a state of America. These interactions enriched my understanding of the Sri Lankan community in Minnesota and provided valuable insights for my work.

As I write this tribute, I am reminded of the profound loss that his passing represents. His compassion, selflessness, and genuine concern for others will forever be remembered and cherished. In honouring the memory of Ananda Srilal Liyanapathiranage, let us not only remember his remarkable achievements but also strive to continue his legacy of compassion, service, and dedication to improving the lives of others.

His spirit will live on in the hearts of all those he touched, and his legacy will continue to inspire acts of kindness and generosity for generations to come.

Great article about this unsung hero who lived amongst yet we knew so little. Hats off to the author Piyumi to make us grateful by hearing the unheard.

Lal, as we called him, assisted a group of Minnesota architects realize their design of a community center in response to the 2004 tsunami. Under the auspices of Architecture for Humanity we supplied the design, but it was Lal who made the project happen. It is with deep sorrow that we hear of his passing.

Very sorry to hear about Lal’s passing. It was a pleasure to work with him on several projects following the 2004 tsunami including the community center at Hikkiduwa. He was a great voice for the Minnesota Sri Lankan Community and Minnesota in general.
