It is with profound sorrow that the Thomian fraternity got to know the untimely demise of Bradman Perera (SBL), one of their heroes in the 1950s.
Brad in his own way is unique to S.Thomas’ College Mt. Lavinia (STC).
With the distinction of being the inaugural 1st XV Thomian Rugby Captain and the opening batsman for STC in the mid 1950s, he will also be long remembered for his gentlemanly and genial qualities.
Brad top scored with a well compiled 47 runs for STC in 1955 at the Big Match, when the other players failed to impress. He scored well in the 2nd innings as well, pulling out College from a probable defeat.
A knee injury kept him out of sports rather early, thus depriving S.Thomas’ and Ceylon cricket and rugby, a star in the making.
It is also a Royal - Thomian series record, that Brad and his son-in-law Rohan Anthonisz opened batting for S.Thomas’ with distinction.
Soft spoken about his achievements he perfectly practised the theory, “hear no evil - say no evil”, making him a thorough gentleman.
Brad excelled to assist, when one was down in spirit and in need of help
He was a popular tea planter who was well accepted in the fraternity.
A very kind and sincere personality, he and wife Nirmal were perfect hosts and I carry fond memories of their hospitality. A loving and devoted father and grandfather, he and Nirmal were always very supportive to the family.
My deepest sympathies to Nirmal and family who will feel the loss immensely, as they were always bonded together very affectionately despite the vast distance between Canada and Sri Lanka.
Between us there will never be goodbyes dear Brad, as you touched hearts very genuinely and affectionately - we will miss you in life and try to come to terms with your demise.
May the Good Lord grant him eternal rest.
In Sympathy,
Milinda Hettiarachchi
