Her Majesty’s seventy year reign saw her travel more widely than any other monarch

On the evening of September 8, Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II died peacefully at her home in Balmoral.
Across the UK and overseas, flowers have been laid, flags have been lowered, bells have tolled and Gun Salutes have been fired in tribute to Her Majesty.

British High Commissioner to Sri Lanka, HE Sarah Hulton OBE said: Her Majesty dedicated her life to public service. She was our greatest diplomat and she leaves us an extraordinary legacy. During this time of great loss, we join His Majesty King Charles III, the Royal Family, the Realms, the Commonwealth and so many around the world in mourning her passing”.

Her Majesty’s seventy year reign saw her travel more widely than any other monarch, and one third of her total overseas visits were to Commonwealth countries. Her Majesty visited Sri Lanka in 1954, just five months after her Coronation - the first visit to Sri Lanka by a reigning monarch. Her ten-day tour included a Royal procession through Colombo, where she opened the first session of the second Parliament of Ceylon; a train ride to Kandy where she experienced a perahera with 140 elephants; a tour of Anuradhapura and Polonnaruwa, and spending Easter in Nuwara Eliya. She visited again in 1981, to witness the construction of the Victoria Dam, Sri Lanka’s largest hydroelectric project, constructed by a UK firm.

As Head of the Commonwealth, Her Majesty helped build a unique family of nations spanning every continent, including Sri Lanka. In a previous Commonwealth Day message, Her Majesty said:  “It is always inspiring to be reminded of the diversity of the people and countries that make up our worldwide family. We are made aware of the many associations and influences that combine through Commonwealth connection, helping us to imagine and deliver a common future.”

The State Funeral of Her Majesty The Queen will take place at Westminster Abbey on September 19 (Monday).
In his first address to the nation as monarch, His Majesty King Charles III paid tribute to his mother, and made a solemn pledge to serve the country with loyalty, respect and love. His Majesty was formally proclaimed King at the Accession Council at St James’s Palace on September 10.

(By the British High Commission)

The Queen in her 70 year role as head of Britain NEVER ONCE ACKNOWLEDGED THE GHASTLY CRIMES COMMITTED BY BRITAIN ALL OVER THE BROWN AND THE BLACK COUNTRIES, IN MILITARY INVASIONS, SUBJUGATIONS AND MASS KILLINGS , PLUNDERING WEALTH, CONVERTING TO CHRISTIANITY, AND DESTROYING OTHER CULTURES. Yet We Are Told That Hitler Did The Most Horrible Things In The World.

The Queen, head of the state of Sri Lanka till 1972, was never allowed to comment on such issues or get involved in politics, according to British rules. But you Sri Lankans should first take a good look at your own nose and finally admit what kind of cruel killings and terrible human rights violations have been committed by the military and on the orders of politicians. So far, none of these war criminals have been sentenced, on the contrary, many are in the highest offices in this country.

Attn : Honourable @Sri Lankan Lawyer - Since you're neither an IT professional nor software & systems development practitioner, I am sure you're not aware that writing content in BOLD face is rude and verbal 'shouting at' someone in writing - in this case, to H.E the High Commissioner, who represents the late Her Majesty's government. That being said, why not mention all the good things the British did to Ceylon during their rule ? Notably we had ethnic harmony among the communities, lacking of which 'was the main root cause' of the 'bloodshed and destruction' during the 27-year long brutal civil war in the island. Secondly, for your ignorance, the British government never 'converted the heathen to Christianity' but the Catholic church and different Christian congregations did! Just curious; did you or any of your brothers or sisters, aunts or uncles or parents, grandparents EVER study in any of the nearly 1450 missionary schools setup solely with church funds? Answer:YES!

    Steve Tuesday, 13 September 2022 05:21 PM

@ Paul Piriampillai: The "ethnic harmony" you speak about was bogus, it was only because the Sinhala, Buddhist village living majority were marginalised without giving education and other social opportunities, and by that them not having a voice. Churches do not make money. So from where are those "church funds"? Besides, primarily only some old buildings of theirs are used for those schools from their part now. Teachers, desks and chairs, text books, exams are by government (people's money) to serve a communal bunch of students taken in on a communalist admission process, which is against standards of equal social rights. This 12 years of children's bringing up in a mono communal environment contributes majorly for antipathy in Sri Lankan society.

Put your old parents and grand parents in old peoples home, but worship this one family as gods and cry for them even when one of them dies at 96.

@Paul Piriampillai The UK these days is thoroughly democratic and fair country, but 100 years ago was not. Most Lankan in my opinion would be better off now going to live in the UK that live in our country with our lack of freedoms. However, the brutal unfairness of the deceased Queen's ancestors must not be forgotten because her wealth came about from their efforts. Just like the Namal Rajapaksa and other MPs got their wealth through unfair means, the British monarchy got it's wealth through brutality and unfairness, including wrongdoing to our ancestors.

But at least the elderly and vulnerable in the UK got the first vaccines. In Sri Lanka the young healthy VIPs got the first Covid vaccines and the elderly and vulnerable without connections were last in line.

At least in the UK the elderly and vulnerable were the first to receive a Covid 19 vaccine. In Sri Lanka the young and healthy VIPs and their connections( even doctors gave priority to their young and healthy relatives) got the first vaccines while the poor elderly and vulnerable without connections were the last in line.

And we all saw the pictures of elderly people in long queues, without getting any help. They even die in the queues. In the UK men are far more gentlemen and concerned about the elderly to let that happen.
