The Turkish Airlines flight from Colombo to Istanbul, which was forced to return to Bandaranaike International Airport (BIA) due to a technical issue with its landing gear, departed again this evening after repairs were completed, Airport and Aviation Services (Sri Lanka) (Private) Limited said.
They said the flight departed BIA at 5.41 p.m today.
Flight TK 733 had taken off from BIA at 10.00 p.m. last night carrying 51 passengers, but developed a landing gear malfunction shortly after departure from Katunayake. As a precaution, the pilot returned the aircraft to BIA, where the runway was prepared for an emergency landing with fire engines, ambulances and emergency response teams placed on standby.
The aircraft, which was carrying 202 passengers and 10 crew members at the time, carried out a precautionary fuel dump over the sea prior to landing to reduce risk. It subsequently landed safely at BIA.
Airport authorities said several outbound flights experienced delays due to the incident. All passengers were safely evacuated after landing and accommodated at nearby hotels while arrangements were made to repair and reposition the aircraft.
