‘The Gathering of Giants- 2025’ Returns to Cinnamon Habarana Complex

The North Central Province of Sri Lanka is home to one of nature’s most awe-inspiring wildlife spectacles-‘the Gathering of the Giants’. As temperatures soar between July and September, the dry wilderness of Minneriya and Kaudulla National Parks comes alive as herds of wild elephants descend upon the ancient reservoirs, or ‘tanks’, in search of food and, most crucially, water.

This natural phenomenon, popularly known as ‘The Gathering’, sees as many as 400 elephants-of all ages- congregating near the banks of the Minneriya and Kaudulla reservoirs. It has been hailed by Lonely Planet as ‘One of the 10 Greatest Wildlife Wonders of the World’.

More than just a survival instinct, the Gathering is a majestic ritual where elephants come to socialise, mate, and feed in the lush grasslands that emerge as the waters recede. The sight of these gentle giants moving together in such large numbers, often just meters away, offers a rare and unforgettable experience for wildlife enthusiasts and tourists from around the world.

The Gathering of Giants, a pioneering conservation initiative by Cinnamon Nature Trails in collaboration with Cinnamon Hotels and Resorts and in partnership with Seylan Bank, is set to take place from 25 to 27 July 2025 at the Cinnamon Habarana Complex. Cinnamon Nature Trails—the dedicated excursions arm of the hospitality group—plays a vital role in curating and sharing this extraordinary natural spectacle with guests staying at Cinnamon Lodge and Cinnamon Village Habarana, the brand’s premier resorts located just nine kilometres from the parks.

Rooted in a profound respect for Sri Lanka’s natural heritage, this initiative exemplifies Cinnamon’s long-standing commitment to ecosystem conservation, community empowerment and the promotion of responsible tourism. Now in its third year, this landmark event brings together conservationists, travellers, nature enthusiasts and storytellers to celebrate the awe-inspiring annual migration of hundreds of wild elephants to Minneriya and Kaudulla National Parks—the site of Asia’s largest gathering of wild elephants. Recognised as the sixth-largest animal gathering globally by Lonely Planet and acclaimed by BBC and CNN, this natural phenomenon offers visitors a unique and memorable experience. At a recent press briefing held at Cinnamon Grand Colombo, Hishan Singhawansha, Chief Executive Officer Designate and Chief Operating Officer of Cinnamon Hotels and Resorts, underscored the significance of the event, stating: The Gathering of Giants truly symbolises our commitment to conservation and sustainability. At Cinnamon Hotels and Resorts, we believe in the power of education and awareness to drive positive change. Through our collaboration with Cinnamon Nature Trails, we strive to champion conservation efforts and promote the importance of harmonious human-elephant coexistence’.

It is one of over 35 ongoing community empowerment and conservation initiatives that define who we are and what we stand for’ he added.

'The Gathering' at Minneriya National Park'

According to wildlife authorities, the elephant gathering at Minneriya is the largest congregation of wild elephants in Asia, with numbers reaching several hundreds. While this awe-inspiring natural phenomenon likely dates back centuries, it has only gained widespread attention in recent years. As such, a dedicated documentary will spotlight this remarkable annual rendezvous, offering it the global recognition it so richly deserves.

‘The Gathering of Giants 2025’, set to take place at Cinnamon Lodge, Habarana, will feature a compelling lineup of speakers, including Dr. Prithiviraj Fernando—Chairman, Trustee, and Scientist at the Centre for Conservation and Research; Professor Sampath Seneviratne, renowned ornithologist from the University of Colombo; and Noah Falklind, award-winning BBC wildlife cameraman.

Dr. Prithiviraj Fernando brings over two decades of field experience on ‘Elephants and Coexistence’ to his session at the Habarana educational event, where he will unpack the complex relationship between humans and elephants and explore effective strategies for sharing space. Meanwhile, Professor Sampath Seneviratne will lead ‘The Avian Migration to Sri Lanka’, a session that delves into the mysterious journeys of migratory birds and highlights the island’s critical role as a global avian corridor.

These experts will provide insights into the importance of conserving the elephant gathering and its significance to Sri Lanka.
