When a friend decided to visit me in London and suggested we take the chance to explore Europe together, Barcelona immediately stood out. With its promise of warm weather, world-renowned architecture, incredible food, and vibrant atmosphere, it felt like the perfect choice for a girls’ trip.
Barcelona, the spirited capital of Catalonia, is a city that thrives on contrasts. Medieval alleyways sit alongside modernist masterpieces, centuries of history unfold around every corner, and a vibrant lifestyle pulses day and night. From the Gothic Quarter’s atmospheric streets to Antoni Gaudí’s fantastical architecture, the city offers a rare blend of heritage and innovation that enchants at every turn.
We began our adventure in Barcelona’s Gothic Quarter (Barri Gòtic), the beating heart of the city’s old town. Its maze of narrow streets and cobblestoned alleyways seemed to whisper stories from the past. We stumbled upon hidden plazas, admired fragments of Roman walls, and lingered in the shadow of the magnificent Barcelona Cathedral, its soaring façade and cloisters steeped in medieval grandeur. A free walking tour proved to be an ideal introduction—our guide weaving tales of the city’s evolution, from its Roman beginnings to its modern-day vibrancy, with just the right balance of history and humour.
From there, we ventured to Las Ramblas, Barcelona’s famous promenade. Lined with flower stalls, quirky shops, and street performers, it was alive with energy. Midway along, the lively La Boqueria Market beckoned. Inside, a kaleidoscope of colours and scents greeted us—glossy fruits, glistening seafood, local cheeses, and delicate pastries. We sampled our way through the stalls.
Evenings in Barcelona were all about tapas. The city’s countless tapas bars made dining a social, shared experience—perfect for a group of friends. Over plates of patatas bravas, seafood bites that reminded us of Sri Lankan cutlets, and endless glasses of sangria, we savoured not only the food but also the joy of being together in such a vibrant city.
The following day was devoted to Gaudí, whose visionary works have become synonymous with Barcelona. At the Sagrada Família, we were awestruck. Even unfinished, the basilica is unlike anything else in the world—its sculptural façades rising heavenward, the interior awash with rainbow light from stained-glass windows. Later, at Parc Güell, we found ourselves wandering through Gaudí’s whimsical dreamscape: mosaic-covered benches, fairytale arches, and the famous dragon sculpture, all set against sweeping views of the city below. We ended the day at Palau Güell, an early Gaudí masterpiece tucked just off Las Ramblas, where the elaborate ironwork and rooftop chimneys revealed the architect’s extraordinary imagination.
By our third day, we craved a different perspective, so we ventured to the coast, and strolled along Barceloneta Beach.
The weekend was made even more delightful when we met Sri Lankan designer Kasun Gunawardene who is now based in Barcelona, pursuing his Masters.
Barcelona proved the perfect destination for a girls’ trip—rich in culture, alive with energy, and brimming with beauty at every turn. It’s a city that invites exploration and rewards curiosity, whether you’re admiring world-famous architecture, indulging in tapas with friends, or simply basking in the Mediterranean sunshine. For us, it was more than just a weekend away, it was a celebration of friendship.
