All is Not Lost Sri Lanka tourism rises above adversity

Sri Lanka has long been celebrated as an island of warmth, hospitality and natural beauty, but its tourism sector has endured a turbulent journey in the past few years. Following the Easter Sunday tragedy, the global Covid pandemic and an unprecedented economic downturn, Sri Lanka's tourism is on a strong recovery path, with targets to exceed its 2018 record of 2.2 million visitors in 2025.

The industry has stood firm through national crises and global upheavals, only to face yet another challenge as torrential rains unleashed floods and devastating landslides across the country, claiming nearly 800 lives and displacing more than one million people.

With cancelled flights, stranded foreign and local travellers and vital infrastructure severely damaged, this catastrophic situation has created major travel disruptions, presenting yet another formidable challenge for Sri Lanka Tourism.

In a statement issued by Sri Lanka Tourism, it was announced that dedicated teams are operating around the clock to assist tourists and industry stakeholders affected by the recent severe weather conditions. The statement further assured that immediate care and support are being prioritised to ensure the safety and well-being of all visitors currently in the country.

Tourists and tourism partners have been urged to remain vigilant as weather conditions continue to fluctuate and to strictly follow all Government-issued safety guidelines. Sri Lanka Tourism cautioned that several regions are still experiencing accessibility challenges due to blocked roads and disrupted transport networks.

In response to the difficulties faced by travellers, the Government has introduced a series of relief measures. These include free visa extensions for tourists whose visas have expired due to weather-related disruptions. Airlines have also been requested to offer full waivers on cancellation and date-change fees, along with flexible rebooking options. A simplified verification process has been implemented as well, allowing travellers to qualify for these concessions through a self-declaration confirming that they have been affected by adverse weather.

Sri Lanka Tourism further acknowledged that many industry stakeholders, including hotels, travel agencies and other service providers, may be facing operational challenges or damage due to the severe conditions. Relief efforts are currently being coordinated, and the 24-hour hotline remains active to provide guidance, support and rapid response where needed.
