The United Kingdom, in its latest travel advisory on Sri Lanka has warned its citizens saying the economic situation was deteriorating in the country with shortages of basic necessities including medicines, fuel and food.

In the travel advisory released today, the UK said Sri Lanka was presently experiencing shortages in basic necessities because of a shortage of hard currency to pay for imports. "There may be long queues at grocery stores, gas stations, and pharmacies. Local authorities may impose the rationing of electricity, resulting in power outages," the travel advisory said.

The travel advisory further warned its travelers against the spread of the dengue virus in Sri Lanka and due to a prevalence of COVID-19 cases in the community, there could be changes to flights and airport operations at short notice.

The British government further said that lockdowns could be imposed in affected areas, and travel restrictions may also be imposed at short notice in the country. (JAMILA HUSAIN)

Yes it's very true and very pathetic. Do not come here even if you are offered free airfare.

Sri Lanka is in a very difficult situation.

    Ranaweera Monday, 14 March 2022 08:22 AM

Because of people like you , Sri Lanks will never have a chance to prosper under any government. At this time we must encourage tourists to come, because if they come then we will have some relief. These UK government are not fond of their citizens, they take every opportunity to hit back at their former colony.

Sri Lanka is facing crisis over crisis since 2019 due to poor leadership and Sri Lankans domiciled in UK are waiting more than 3 years to see their kith and kin

    sam Monday, 14 March 2022 08:28 AM

Situation is almost pathetic where rising prices are observed, queues and shortages. Whether one can enjoy the same as they did in the past is questionable.

Kaleel Cader Monday, 14 March 2022 08:32 AM

So sad to see paradise island become a begging island! Please do assist fellow citizens with whatever you may have to survive this poverty crisis as we are one country one people! God bless our People!

    Anthony Monday, 14 March 2022 08:34 AM

    Vipin B Monday, 14 March 2022 09:11 AM

Here goes our last hope for foreign revenue and this marks life-support for tourism industry. As hard as it seems, it is undeniably a easonable request. Probably other countries will follow this soon.

Karalasingam Sivalingam Monday, 14 March 2022 09:31 AM

Tourism hit by present crisis. Do everything possible to revive it.

    Jef Monday, 14 March 2022 09:53 AM

Sri lanka must lease the country to China or Russia for small period to recover debt and put the country to cirplus it is wise to take action sooner than later 30yr lease will fix specialy Chinese they no how to turn things around...food for thought....

    Praveen Monday, 14 March 2022 10:11 AM

Fair warning although if you are a tourist in a decent hotel in any of tourist hotspots you are going to be fine. You are here to relax, get off devices and mindless web browsing so powercuts will be perfect! But Sri Lanka should also issue a travel warning to anyone going to the UK for impending nuclear disaster and long lines for fuel and rising inflation as well.

    Rohan Monday, 14 March 2022 10:16 AM

Ha Ha Ha all you morons who voted for this sanniya now you feel hurt no. What can you give a tourist those of you who want them to come mosquitos, humid heat, Bathala- and Manioc? Not sure they will want to come.

    M.M.M.Izzeth Monday, 14 March 2022 10:30 AM

    Time to leave the country.

    John Monday, 14 March 2022 10:55 AM

Russian and Chinese friends will visit Sri Lanka.

    Antonita Monday, 14 March 2022 05:27 PM

Besides, UK tourists visit Sri Lanka mostly for the weather, food and to generally have a good time. In my motherland, even a poverty stricken family will cook rice and dhal at least, they don't que up at food banks because they are so lazy to cook and have spent their benefit money on branded bags and clothes and then call them selves poor!!!

    Paulson Monday, 14 March 2022 07:05 PM

Why to blame UK, China or India ? who is responsible for this situation ? Successive political leadership over the years siphoned wealth of the country and sold country to China ! At least now realise the situation and react..Absolutely it was a paradise island.

Yesh Vithara Tuesday, 15 March 2022 02:08 PM

Sri Lanka should issue warnings against visiting UK and other EU countries too every time there's a random stabbing or lorry attack.
