One dead, four injured when teenager-driven jeep crashed at Mahabage

One person died and four others were badly injured when a jeep driven by a 16-year old boy collided with four vehicles at the Mahabage junction in Welisara this morning, the police said.

Police Spokesman SSP Nihal Thalduwa said the jeep was going from Colombo to Negombo veered off the road and rammed into two motorcycles, a three wheeler and a car coming from the opposite direction.

He said the injured in the accident have been admitted to the Ragama Teaching Hospital where a 51-year old was succumbed to his injuries.

The youth was arrested over the accident and his father was also taken into the custody for allowing a minor to drive the vehicle.

Preliminary investigations revealed that the accident occurred as the driver couldn't control the speed. (Darshana Sanjeewa Balasuriya)

How many incidents such as this? Unless there is a severe punishment this will not stop. If any case of underage person driving a vehicle is detected the value equivalent to the vehicle should be imposed as a penalty or such vehicles should be forfeited.

Youngsters driving without license is high among one specific community in SL. The main reason is mothers not in control of their kids. The religious leaders should focus on reforming this situation instead of wasting time on preaching history in religious places. Then police who should act to prevent accidents and not let drivers violate rules, then catch them for fines. This boy and his father should be punished severely.

According to One Country One Law theory, "It could be the fault of the deceased person", AG will withdraw the case as he cannot find sufficient evidence to proceed with the case because the main witness the 51 yer old is not present.
