Sri Lankan economy will suffer further blows if the UNHRC manages to adopt another resolution on the island nation, Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB) MP Eran Wickramaratne said today.

MP Wickramaratne told a press conference that Sri Lanka is already in a bad wicket when it comes to the UNHRC sessions that would begin on February 27, 2022 with the developments on the Easter Sunday attacks and the disclosures made by former Intelligence Officer Shani Abeysekera in his petition which was filed recently. “Sri Lanka’s economy will be affected if a resolution against Sri Lanka is adopted. One important factor which foreign investors would look at is the upholding of rule of law in a country when considering investing in that country. Accordingly, no investor would come if UNHRC adopts a resolution and declares that Sri Lanka has failed to maintain rule of law,” he said.

Also, the MP charged that there is a move to get Ceylon Electricity Board (CEB) to import fuel directly in the future while there is a move by the Ceylon Petroleum Corporation (CPC) to increase fuel prices by a greater percentage than the LIOC which increased its prices recently. “We want the government to show the nation the rationale behind another fuel price hike,” he said. At present Sri Lanks has a man at the top of its military who is considered by a large number of democracies as a war criminal. Far from charging him or even demoting him The current regime in Sri Lanka promoted him to the top job. It is factors like this that show the worlds democracies that the country has its head in the sand as regards human rights. Of course Sri Lanka will always be backed up by repressive states on international human rights matters. China will back anybody even were they killing 100 citizens per day. Human rights means nothing to them , only what is good for China , no matter what. The question we must ask ourselves do we want to be beholden to these type of states , or bite the bullet and face up to our democratic responsibilities.
