Colombo Uni. graduates' actions at Convocation exemplary: Sobitha Thera

How the graduates of the Colombo University acted during the convocation ceremony was exemplary and a great move, Ven. Omalpe Sobitha Thera said today.

The prelate told a news conference held in Embilipitiya that graduates of the Colombo University had displayed their self-respect and that the President and the Government should realize their message.

Ven. Sobitha Thera said all religious leaders including the Mahanayakes and social activists should take this as a lesson.

The Thera said even though most people kept mum when posts were given on political, personal and nepotism, the graduates of the Colombo University showed their protest.

He said the country had faced a catastrophe due to nepotism and that the President should realize at least now that his action plan so far has been a failure.

The graduates of the Colombo University were seen refusing to obtain their graduate certificates from the Chancellor of the Colombo University Ven. Muruththettuwe Ananda Thera.(Ajithalal Shanthaudaya and Jayantha Nanayakkara)

This is a disgraceful behaviour of students . We may not agree with the appointment of this prelate to this post and yet as venerable monk he shouldn't be humiliated like this at the ceremony. I don't like it at all. It would be wrong to do this . If you do not be happy with his appointment .. Ask UGC to remove him or take other actions But don't do this any more time . It is good at for his status as respected monk in this country. I hope that action must be taken against all those done this

In response to Colombo, why should they be punished. They chose not to accept the certificate from an uneducated fool. If the idiot had any self-respect he should have refused to accept the post of Chancellor. In response to Ranaweera. This is not a fake show. They would rather get their certificate by mail than accept it by some illiterate moron.

@colombo, it is a well accepted fact and practice of all over the world and traditional practice of Asian countries that in a graduation ceremony newly graduated students obtain their graduation certificate from a person who holds a better or higher qualification than him or her. Any person should command the respect and not demand the respect.

This is not a disgracefully behavior of Students, as claimed by 'Colombo'. It had been seen in many instance that public opinion is disregarded. So how do you want them to protest. Granting pardon for a convicted murderer and then appointing him for a responsible post, both without any explanation. How many such instances? How can the students ask the UGC to remove him? The appointment was given as the Priest was increasingly becoming critical of Govt.'s actions and to win him over.The nurses may soon decide to dump him from their Union Presidency. A still worse appointment was the Head of the Task Force on One Country one Law.
