Sidath Dhammika, the former superintendent of Boossa Prison, was shot and killed yesterday in the Thalagaha area of Akmeemana, Galle, allegedly by underworld criminals.

Investigations have revealed that Dhammika, who previously served as the Assistant Prison Superintendent at Boossa, had received multiple death threats from notorious underworld figures including ‘Podi Lassi’ during his tenure.

According to the police, an unknown gunman arrived at Dhammika’s residence in Kaluwamanagoda, Akmeemana, yesterday afternoon (13), and opened fire with a 9mm pistol before fleeing the scene.

The 61-year-old, who had retired in March last year, died instantly from the gunshot wounds.

While no arrests have been made and the exact motive behind the killing remains unclear, investigations have revealed that Dhammika had been one of several prison officials targeted by underworld criminals, including Arumahandi Janith Madhusanka, better known as ‘Podi Lassi.’

Podi Lassi, a former inmate at Boossa Prison, was granted bail in December last year before fleeing to India.

He had publicly threatened several high-ranking prison officials, stating that his influence would persist outside prison.

In September 2020, Galle Magistrate’s Court had ordered the Boossa Prison Superintendent to present Podi Lassi in court after he made death threats against the Commissioner of Prisons, other prison officers, and prominent figures including the President and Defence Secretary.
