A tusker, believed to be the one called ‘Sumedha’ had been hit be a moving lorry on the Habarana- Maradankadawala road yesterday morning , with one of its tusks broken off. The wildlife authorities have started operations to trace the injured animal . The broken part of the tusk had been found lying at the site of the accident.
Veterinary Surgeon of the Anuradhapura Wildlife Range Dr.Chandana Jayasinghe told Daily Mirror such an injury could be fatal to the animal unless treated and it should be found and treated as a result.
He said tusks lead up to eyes of elephants .
“This injury can cause excessive pain and bleeding. It can result in infections, “ he said.
