A special security arrangement has been implemented for the India–Pakistan T20 cricket match scheduled to be held in Colombo on February 15, Cabinet Spokesperson and Minister Dr. Nalinda Jayatissa said yesterday.

Speaking at the Cabinet media briefing, the Minister said the Pakistani government had initially decided not to participate in the match due to regional issues, but later reversed its decision following Sri Lanka’s intervention.

Dr. Jayatissa said that the government views cricket as an important platform to promote friendship, cooperation, and regional harmony. He emphasized that Sri Lanka is prepared to intervene without hesitation whenever opportunities arise to strengthen cooperation among countries through sports.

“There was a situation where the Indo-Pak match was in doubt due to various regional concerns. Over the past few days, the government made several interventions, and as a result, we now have the opportunity to hold this match,” the Minister said.

He added that several parties, including the International Cricket Council (ICC) and Sri Lanka Cricket, played a role in facilitating the match. The President also held a special telephone discussion with the Prime Minister of Pakistan regarding the issue, after which the Pakistani government officially confirmed its participation.

“As a country, we are pleased to host this match between India and Pakistan in Sri Lanka. If we are given any opportunity to use cricket as a means to build friendship and cooperation in the region, the government will act without delay,” Dr. Jayatissa said.

He further assured that maximum security will be provided for the event. The Sri Lanka Police have already implemented a special traffic plan in anticipation of a large number of spectators expected to attend the match.
