SL Police will commit more to uphold human rights with changing times – Police Legal Head

With the changing times Sri Lanka Police will also strictly  commit to protect and uphold human rights of the citizens of the  country and measures will be taken without hesitation to discipline  wrongful officers who use force or torture to solve crimes, a top police  official said.  

DIG Police Legal Division Ruwan Gunasekara told the Daily Mirror yesterday that times are changing around the world where new culture is emerging to give utmost importance to respect human rights. Likewise, in the police department, the Inspector General of Police has given fresh instructions to commit to protect and uphold human rights, especially those who come in seek of the police service. DIG Gunasekara said that he heads the three divisions of the Police Legal Division, Police Disciplinary Division and Human Rights Division, where he constantly holds programmes to educate officers in safeguarding human rights.

Recently a special circular was released to all the police OICs and senior gazetted officers on the instructions of the Police Chief to look into the public complaints without fail and meet out justice to those who come seeking it. He stated in the past, officers used to practice harsh methods in solving crimes and dealing with suspects and such occurrences will be dealt with strict disciplinary action in future.
