The Police Narcotics Bureau (PNB) has seized over Rs. 283 million in cash, the largest amount ever recovered in the history of the Sri Lankan police, in the Kurunegala area.
The money, believed to be proceeds from drug trafficking, was discovered hidden in a house, along with two vehicles.
Acting Inspector General of Police Priyantha Weerasuriya said at a press conference yesterday the money belongs to a drug trafficker operating within the prison.
He said the police have informed the Kurunegala Magistrate’s Court about the recovery.
Meanwhile, the Acting IGP emphasised that organised criminals will no longer receive political protection under the new government’s policies.
He said that steps are being taken to issue red notices for criminals operating abroad and bring them back to Sri Lanka.
To date, the police have obtained over 60 red notices from Interpol for individuals wanted in Sri Lanka.
The Acting IGP acknowledged that past failures in crime suppression had allowed the rise of more criminals, many of whom continue their activities from within prison walls.
He said that efforts to curb such crimes are ongoing.
Regarding drug control, the Acting IGP said that the police have made significant drug seizures in recent months.
The Acting IGP said that from September 23, 2024, to January 10, 2025, the police recovered 373 kg of heroin, 3,504 kg of cannabis, 751 kg of ice, 3.7 kg of cocaine, 167 kg of hashish, and 482 kg of other drugs.
