The suspect, who has a criminal history, was previously a disrobed Buddhist monk and an army deserter.
According to authorities, the suspect has been involved in multiple criminal activities, prompting police stations nationwide to check for records of his previous offenses. He had been remanded in connection with another case but was released on bail just two days prior to his arrest.
Police were able to trace the suspect’s location through signals received from a mobile phone he had stolen from the victim. The phone played a crucial role in identifying his whereabouts, leading to his swift apprehension.
A senior police official confirmed that investigations are ongoing, with authorities exploring the possibility of other individuals being involved in the rape. The police are also working to determine whether the incident was premeditated. The suspect is currently under further interrogation, and police will take steps to produce him before the Anuradhapura Chief Magistrate after recording his statement.
Meanwhile Minister of Health Dr. Nalinda Jayatissa visited Anurahdapura teaching hospital yesterday and carried out an inspection of the security arrangements at the hospital premises and look into the steps to be taken to
