A police officer and two others were arrested in the early hours of last morning by the Police Special Task Force (STF) in Jaffna on suspicion of transporting cattle for slaughter by a van for transport of schoolchildren.
Investigations revealed that the suspects were transporting cattle illegally from Punkuduthivu to Mandathive for slaughter. The STF had waylaid and carried out the raid on information from the public.
Police said they seized eight cattle in the van displaying a “School Service” board. They said the suspects would be liable to legal action for transporting cattle illegally without a permit and for causing cruelty to animals. Investigations revealed that one of the suspects was a police officer attached to Jaffna police.
The suspects and the case productions were handed over to Jaffna police for further action.
