No more cyclonic storm, but rain will continue: Met. Department

Sri Lanka will continue to experience showers this month as the Northeast Monsoon remains activated, an official from the Department of Meteorology said yesterday.

Director Department of Meteorology Meryl Mendis told Daily Mirror that Sri Lanka could experience rains starting from the second week in December as the monsoon will be more active during that time. “Sri Lanka is currently in the monsoon period, and therefore some rains could be expected during the second week in December as the Northeast Monsoon is expected to get more active around that time,” he said.

Northern and Eastern Provinces are mostly affected by the Northeast monsoon rains which fall at the end of the year.  However he denied reports on the development of another low pressure system or a cyclonic storm. “There is no sign of any low pressure system or a cyclonic storm anywhere near Sri Lanka at the moment,” he said.

Meanwhile spells of showers were forecast by the Department of Meteorology in the Northern, Western, and Southern Provinces and in Kandy and Nuwara Eliya District during the coming days in its official weather forecast. Thunder showers were forecast in Uva, North Central and Eastern Provinces.

The highest rainfall of 42mm was recorded from Pooneryn while Iranamadu received 41mm, Vavunikulam received 21.5mm, and Kilinochchi received 20.5mm of rain. Other areas including Colombo and hydro catchment areas had not received considerable amounts of rains as of last evening.
