New controlled price for rice will be announced this week : Minister

The New controlled price for rice will be announced this week Minister of Trade, Commerce, Food, security and Cooperative Deverlopment  Wasantha Samarasinghe said yesterday.   

He said the new price will be fair by farmers and consumers. “We have received advice from the Hector Kobbekaduwa Agriculture Research institute on the prices of rice,” he said.   

“The Maha harvest has begun but only 20 percent is completed. 

However the harvest from Anuradhapura, Polonnaruwa and Ampara District which accounts for two thirds of rice production is still to begin. All these factors will be taken into consideration when deciding on the price.   

This assurance from the Minister comes in the wake of cry by the farmers for a fair price for their produce.
