Motion by fmr SriLankan Airlines CEO alleging threats by bribery commission to be considered on March 19

  • Motion claims officials exerted pressure on Chandrasena while recording his statement

A motion filed on behalf of former SriLankan Airlines Chief Executive Officer Kapila Chandrasena, alleging that officials of the Commission to Investigate Allegations of Bribery or Corruption exerted pressure on him while recording his statement, was fixed to be considered before the permanent Chief Magistrate of the Colombo Chief Magistrate’s Court on March 19, the date on which the related case is scheduled to be taken up.

The Colombo Additional Magistrate Lahiru Silva made this order after considering the motion when the matter was taken up before him while sitting for the Chief Magistrate.

Presenting the motion, Rienzie Arsekularatne, appearing for the suspect, sought permission to make submissions regarding an incident that allegedly occurred when Chandrasena appeared before the Bribery Commission on March 12 to provide a statement.

Counsel informed court that the suspect had allegedly been subjected to pressure by officials of the Commission while his statement was being recorded.

The motion further stated that when Chandrasena was produced before the Colombo Fort Magistrate’s Court following his arrest, counsel had sought bail and also brought the alleged threats to the attention of court. Counsel had also requested that the matter be taken up before the Magistrate assigned to hear bribery-related cases on March 13.

However, as the court ordered that the suspect be remanded until March 19, the motion stated that Chandrasena, who is currently in remand custody, had instructed his counsel to seek an opportunity to make detailed submissions regarding the alleged incident before the Magistrate handling bribery matters at the earliest possible date. After considering the request, Colombo Additional Magistrate Lahiru Silva directed that the motion be taken up before the permanent Chief Magistrate on March 19, the same date on which the case is already fixed. Meanwhile, Chandrasena was arrested on Thursday over allegations that while serving as the Chief Executive Officer of SriLankan Airlines and as the Chairman of the procurement committee responsible for the purchase of Airbus aircraft, he had allegedly conspired with several others, including his wife, to solicit a bribe.

It is alleged that a fraudulent company had been established in Brunei under the name of his wife and that a bank account had been opened in Singapore in the name of that company to receive the alleged bribe.

Following his arrest, the suspect was produced before the Colombo Fort Magistrate’s Court and remanded till March 19.
