Claiming that there was no political victimisation behind the questioning of politicians, Public Security Minister Ananda Wijepala said today many more politicians will be summoned by law enforcement authorities daily in the future according to their investigations.
The Minister told reporters that investigation were not carried out on political ends and that the police and the IGP have been given full freedom to carry out investigations. “People are summoned as part of their investigations,” he said.
Responding to a question whether there was political vicitimisation behind SLPP MP Namal Rajapaksa being questioned by the CID, he said there is no political victimisation behind politicians being questioned and that Namal or anyone else will be summoned if law enforcement authorities wanted to record statements.
Responding to a question about claims of threats to national security, the Minister said several incidents of underworld activities had been reported and that doubts have arisen about sudden escalation of underworld activities and added that intelligence services have launched a probe to reveal whether there were certain groups behind these incidents.
“We have been receiving some clues,” he said.
The Minister said the government is taking action regarding the escalation of underworld activities based on intelligence reports.
“We are not hesitant to take action against underworld activities and drug smuggling. If any politician is connected to these activities, we are not hesitant to question them and take action against them,” he added.
