A man was sentenced to a mandatory two-month prison term and fined Rs. 2,500 by the Mount Lavinia Magistrate’s Court yesterday (19) for transporting approximately 65 litres of petrol without a valid permit.
The order was issued by Magistrate Pasan Amarasena.
The suspect, a resident of the Badovita area in Mount Lavinia, had been taken into custody by the Wellawatte Police on the night of March 18, following a tip-off that fuel had been collected from a filling station in the Wellawatte area.
Police arrested the suspect near the fuel station and later produced him before court.
During the arrest, officers recovered four cans containing approximately 65 litres of petrol from the lorry. The total value of the seized fuel is estimated at around Rs. 20,000.
