General Secretary of the Professionals’ Alliance for the Protection of Rights of the Public Ravindra Jayasinghe who is also a executive committee member of the Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna said the monthly rent payable for the parliamentarians’ official residences in Madiwela should also be re-assessed under the government policy.
He told the media yesterday, that the monthly rent for the official residence of a parliamentarian in close proximity to the parliament is Rs. 2000 and that steps should be taken to re-asses them and to charge the revised rent.
“Although the National People’s Power pledged from the election platform to abolish all perks and privileges of the public representatives, at present every parliamentarian is entitled to privileges amounting to more than Rs.500,000 per month. Accordingly, the 159 ruling party parliamentarians are enjoying privileges costing Rs. 95 million to the government per month. “
“Any gazette notification issued by the minister in charge of the portfolio should be sanctioned by parliament.
