Liquor Company ordered to pay Rs. 1.35 Bn in unpaid taxes

Colombo Additional Magistrate Pavithra Sanjeewani Pathiraja yesterday (10) ordered Randenigala Distilleries Ltd., in Kaduwela - a liquor manufacturing company- to pay a sum of Rs. 1,358,773,144 (apprx. Rs. 1.35 Bn) in taxes within one month, which the company is accused of evading.  

This order was issued during the hearing of a case filed by the Commissioner General of Inland Revenue, alleging that the company failed to pay income tax, VAT, and Nation Building Tax due to the government between 2012 and 2015.  

Piyumi Wijewikrama, a director of the Randenigala Distilleries Company, appeared in court.  

The case names Sarath Kumara Wijewikrama, Buddhika Wijewikrama, and another female director as respondents.  

Filed last year, the case was examined by then- Colombo Additional Magistrate Bandara Ilangasinghe, who ruled that the company must pay the outstanding tax amount to the government.
