The government yesterday admitted that a legal barrier has hindered efforts in brining down former Central Bank Governor Arjuna Mahendran to Sri Lanka.  Cabinet spokesman Dr. Nalinda Jayatissa told the weekly briefing to announce Cabinet decisions that however, the government is making every effort to extradite him.

Responding to a question, he said the legal process against him regarding the Central Bank bond scam will continue whether Mahendran is brought back to the country or not.
“Our effort is to bring him back to the country,” he said.

Responding to a question that three trial-at-bars were taking up cases with regard to the Central Bank bond scam and former President Ranil Wickremesinghe had not been named an accused in the case, the Minister said legal action will be taken against Ranil Wickremesinghe, who was behind all this, by connecting him to the case.

“Extradition of Mahendran is important for that,” the Minister said.
