The rapid accumulation of wealth by certain National People’s Power (NPP) ministers has become the ‘Eighth Wonder of the World’, claimed Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB) MP Dr. Kavinda Jayawardene during a media briefing held yesterday.
“One wonders how these ministers have become millionaires when their official salaries are supposedly contributed to party funds. This is truly another wonder of the world,” Jayawardene remarked, responding to questions from journalists.
He also made critical comments about the apparent physical transformation of some ministers. “As their wealth increases, so do their waistlines. Some are reportedly suffering from health issues such as high blood pressure and diabetes. Perhaps they are now enjoying types of food they never had access to before,” he added.
Addressing recent speculation about potential social media restrictions, Jayawardene cautioned the government against taking such measures, citing a dangerous precedent.
“In Nepal, images of politicians wearing luxury wristwatches went viral on social media. The government responded by banning these platforms, which triggered massive public outrage. The situation escalated to the point where the Prime Minister fled the country, the wife of a former Prime Minister was tragically killed, and the Foreign Minister was publicly assaulted,” he said.
“We sincerely hope Sri Lanka never experiences such chaos. But resorting to extreme actions like banning social media will only make things worse,” he warned.
Meanwhile, the political advocacy group Purawesi Balaya has filed a complaint with the Bribery Commission, calling for an investigation into the assets of several NPP ministers. The complaint specifically names Wasantha Samarasinghe, Sunil Handunnetti, Nalinda Jayatissa, and Bimal Rathnayake, urging authorities to determine how these individuals have amassed their current levels of wealth.
