Whilst quoting an interview conducted by Daily Mirror Associate Editor Kelum Bandara with JVP General Secretary Tilvin Silva where a question was raised as to whether the party has given up socialism, Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB) MP Harsha de Silva yesterday questioned as to whether the NPP (JVP) has got its ideologies mixed up.
“Mr. Bandara has raised a question during an interview with JVP General Secretary Tivin Silva as to whether his party has given up socialism. He responds saying his party still stands for socialism. However, it seems that the JVP (NPP) has got mixed up with their socialism.
This is what one could conclude when looking at the budget presented by President Anura Kumara Dissanayake on Monday.
“What would happen if a Christian priest goes to a temple and preaches ‘Dhamma Pada’ and what would happen if a Buddhist monks holds a service in a church. President Dissanayake has engaged in a similar exercise. He has got mixed up with Dhamma Pada and also got mixed up with the church service. One wonders what the NPP stands for. Are they for socialism or for capitalism? If not are they standing for a social market economy? The NPP should state their stand openly,” the MP said kicking off the second reading debate on the budget.
Also, he said vehicle imports will be very risky as prices of vehicles have gone up remarkably.
“The President stated in his budget speech that the majority of tax revenue is expected from vehicle imports.
“Vehicle import is very risky. Who can afford to import vehicles at this rate? I do not think there will be affluent people to import vehicles at current rates,” he also said.
